Area Attractions

There's a sign on one of the downtown railroad overpasses that proclaims Fredericksburg as America's Most Historic City. While that may be debated or contested by some residents of other places, there's no denying that a lot of history happened in and around Fredericksburg. Here are a few of our favorite things to see and do in the area.

The Civil War had a major impact on Fredericksburg - economically, socially and physically. During about a one and one half year period, four major campaigns of the war were fought in or within 20 miles of the city. These four battles - Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness and Spotsylvania Courthouse - involved hundreds of thousands of men and forever changed the landscape of Fredericksburg and the surrounding area. The National Park Service administers the battlefields and provides an outstanding array of walks and talks, exhibits, self guided walks, car tours and publications detailing the events that took place. George Washington was born about an hour to the east of Fredericksburg, in Westmoreland County. He grew up just across the river from Fredericksburg at Ferry Farm. His Mother lived in a house he bought for her here in Fredericksburg and his sister married Fielding Lewis and lived in the beautiful Kenmore house within the City.

At one time, George Washington owned the land that our store sits on. He sold the property when he inherited Mt. Vernon.

Washington grew up here and there are many sites in the area where you can explore and learn about his life and times. Click or touch the images below to find out more about a few of our favorites.

The Fredericksburg area is not just about history. Nearby are several natural areas too. The mountains of Shenandoah National Park are a little more than an hour away and you can enjoy hiking trails, camping and other recreational activities at Lake Anna State Park and Prince William Forest Park - both just a short drive.
